Collision Specialists Painted a Glow Bike!

Collision Specialists had the opportunity to paint a bike glow in the dark. We did some research and used Glow Inc glow in the dark powder. We got the 4oz of 15-35m Ultra Green powder. It is supposed to be the brightest glow in the dark EVER!

Before paint!

Before paint!

This is the bike we used to paint. We did not strip all of the paint off of this aluminum frame. The existing paint will help keep the bond with the aluminum. If you were to strip ALL of the paint off, you would have to use an acid etching primer on the entire frame, which is an additional step that is unnecessary if it can be avoided. We sanded down the paint to bring up some texture and sanded cuts and scratches down to the aluminum. Anywhere the aluminum showed we spot sprayed an acid etching primer. Then, we took steel wool pads and scratched up the frame really good. It is important to make sure every single inch is scuffed. To miss a spot means that you risk a bubble or flake to develop there in the future. You want the primer to really stick into the grooves of your “scuff”. After the frame was nice and smooth we hung it in the booth (above) to be primed and painted. We primed it and then painted with an ultra white. The advice we got was to use a white frame below the glow.

Because the pigment of the glow will NOT dye your paint, DO NOT add it to paint with pigment. We added the powder to a CLEAR base, a little flex additive and sprayed it on that way. We painted the frame, fork and wheels. (Note, wheels are not really a good idea and would be best to concentrate all of the powder on the frame.).

This was what the frame looked like after the glow was sprayed and we turned off the lights. We used a shop lamp to charge it for a few minutes and the frame lit up the entire booth! It was pretty awesome. We then did a clear coat WITH the UV protectant. The first coat didn’t inhibit the glow strength, but the second did. Not to the point that it doesn’t glow, but it did take away a good 20% of the glow it had before the clear. We are going to try another bike frame, this time over fluorescent pigment, and NO UV clear and see how it works. We plan on doing some step by step instructionals on prepping bike frames for paint.

We do paint bike frames any color available. Visit our Facebook to inquire about frame painting. Professionally finished and baked in a paint oven, looks like glass!

As for Glow Inc Glow in the dark powder, the stuff is really what they say it is. BRIGHT. But you do have to keep in mind the science behind the glow. It is brightest once it leaves it light source and will deteriorate from then on. It then continues to emit light, but less bright, for hours. It is important to note that it has to be nearly pitch black to really see the powder of the glow. It does not really show up in ambient light. If you are riding in pitch black at night, you can see it, but if you are riding streets with lights, you AREN’T going to see it. It is the nature of the paint!

Selecting A Car Wax For That Showroom Finish

Walking into a auto parts store and selecting car care products can be overwhelming with the vast amount of car care products available. There was a time where selecting a car wax product was easy when comparing a couple of products. Now there is paste wax, liquid wax, and spray wax. There are countless manufacturers all trying to market the same product under a different label. So how do we choose that wax that gives our vehicle the warm vibrant three dimensional look?

The first step by far is to clean the vehicle and leave the paint immaculate and free of dirt/dust particles. It is for this reason that car care is recommended to be performed in a clean environment and in the shade. After the car is completely clean and dry we are ready to top it off with a coat of wax.

The three types of car wax available on the market are paste, liquid, and spray wax. All three have pros and cons. Paste wax is the pioneer of car waxes. Paste wax commonly made from all natural carnauba wax. Carnauba wax comes from the Brazilian native plant Copernicia prunifera. Paste wax has a thicker consistency and will require some elbow grease to apply. Carnauba paste wax give depth and richness to your car. Paste waxes need to be reapplied every couple of months and not to mention it smells good!

Liquid car waxes are usually synthetic. Advancement in technologies has enabled the production of a synthetic wax derived from synthetic polymers. Liquid wax will give a sleek glassy and high gloss look. It does not produce the warm and depth that carnauba paste wax produce. Liquid wax can be more difficult to apply an even coat on the paint. The highlight of liquid car waxes is the durability. It will last a lot longer than paste wax. Liquid car waxes are perfect for the busy car owners who treasure their ride.

Spray car waxes are usually produced from synthetic nano technology. Spray wax is usually is broken down into nano particles making it very thin and easy to apply. This type of wax will almost fill in any minute clear coat damage on its own. Easy to spray on and buff out. This method will require less application time and less elbow grease. The drawback, well, it doesn’t last very long. Spray waxes will require reapplication every month.

The best method to get that show car status is to use a combination of synthetic and natural wax. Most car show enthusiasts will apply a liquid wax, let it dry for 12-24 hours, followed by a coat of paste wax. This gives that glass wet look from the liquid wax and the richness and depth of paste wax.
